Vinayak Vikram, composer

I love and enjoy classical music, and have been learning the recorder and violin for several years.  I also have started composing seriously this past year.

I play the conventional recorder family (Sopranino, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass). I use the Mollenhauer Modern Alto and Modern Soprano, and have significantly extended the upper range of those, even past the accepted fingerings for these recorders. I recently acquired a Helder tenor, which is able to cover the full range of the flute. I have learned to play rapid scales on the Helder up to E7 (the highest note), and feel confident that I can handle flute repertoire. I  have participated in several competitions and festivals on the recorder, mostly with the alto and soprano. Notably, I was the 1st prize winner in the Baroque Woodwinds Section of the American Virtuoso International Music Competition, and as a result played at Carnegie Hall this September. I arranged and performed Bach's Chaconne from Partita in D minor for this competition. I was also the 3rd place winner at the American Talent Competition, and 2nd place winner at the JS Fest International Competition, both with my arrangement of the third movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. I am also the only youth in the Mid Peninsula Recorder Orchestra.

I have started studying composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music this fall. I have won the Beeffie Award for the Best Creative Video at the Beethovinci online music competition, and Gold Award for Best Original Composition at the Reinecke International Online Competition, and the the Beethovinci competition for playing and arranging my original composition for a recorder quartet in G minor.  I was a regional finalist for the National Federation of Music Clubs, Junior Composer competition with my composition for string quartet in D minor. I have composed solo works for the recorder in A minor and E minor, concertinos for the violin in A minor.  I have also composed 2 movements of a symphony - the first movement in E major focussing on strings, and the second movement focussing on winds in E minor. I am inspired by the Classical and Romantic composers - Mozart and Mendelssohn, and by Nature. I have recently started exploring nuances of other cultures, and world music especially the music of my cultural roots.

I am a violinist in the California Youth Symphony. Last year, I had the honor of being concertmaster of the Intermezzi ensemble at CYS. This has helped me compose music for chamber strings and symphony orchestra.
